The Crimson Volcano

‘The glowing crane told us that Glorious Old had gone back home,’ said Billy. ‘But I thought her home was her cave?’

‘It was not her first home,’ said Spark suddenly. ‘Oh, I should have remembered the story better. Glorious Old was born in a volcano.’

‘Whoa,’ said Lola, sounding impressed. ‘That’s gnarly.’

‘And not just any volcano,’ Spark went on. ‘The Crimson Volcano – the most active and unpredictable volcano in all of the Dragon Realm.’

‘Now I see why we didn’t start by looking in this volcano,’ said Dylan.

‘Do you think we can trust the crane?’ said Jordan. ‘It did try to lure us deep into a cave that wanted to swallow us.’

‘It had no reason to lie to us,’ said Ling-Fei. ‘It spoke the truth about Glorious Old.’

‘How sure are we that there won’t be something waiting in the volcano to devour us?’ said Dylan.

‘Oh, there most certainly will be something unpleasant in the volcano,’ said Buttons. ‘You’ll just have to outsmart it. But you’re all good at that.’

‘So where is this Crimson Volcano?’ said Billy. ‘We need to find it before we can even think about facing whatever unpleasantness is inside it.’

‘It was last seen in the Forgotten Sea,’ said Tank.

‘Oooh, wonderful!’ Charlotte brushed off some of the glitter still stuck to her suit. ‘I for one wouldn’t mind a quick dip in the sea to get all of this stuff off me.’

‘I still can’t believe we went into the Cave of Secrets for nothing,’ said Dylan glumly. ‘Nearly swallowed by a cave and we didn’t even come close to finding the bones we were looking for.’

‘It wasn’t for nothing,’ said Buttons. ‘We’d have never thought to go to the Crimson Volcano. It may have been Glorious Old’s birthplace, but it certainly isn’t where I’d have thought to find her bones. One clue leads to the next.’

‘I just hope this is the final clue,’ said Billy. ‘Get to the volcano, find the bones, summon the spirit…’ He trailed off as he realized that even if the Crimson Volcano did hold Glorious Old’s bones, it was far from the final step. He sighed and ran his hand through his hair. ‘We need something to go right,’ he said. ‘We’re running out of time.’
